Default Shenandoah trip

planning a trip from Michigan to Skyway dr thru shenandoah park. when I plot it on my gps it takes me on Ohio and Penn. toll road. did the calculations and it seemed pretty pricey. When I avoid toll roads its about 60 miles longer and the roads look like twisty two laners. I'm pulling my toyhauler and dont want ant surprises. any advice?????

Find the best way to Columbus, OH. Get on US 33 East to Athens, OH. Get on US 50 East to Winchester, VA. From there, south on US 522 to Front Royal and the northern terminus of Skyline Drive. It is noteworthy that this is a pay to drive road. There are a few free days. US 33 is 4 lane and US 50 is 4 lane to Clarksburg, WV. From there it is somewhat twisty and up and down but, you are traversing a north/south mountain range by going west to east.

If you decide to go Rt 50 through the Hill Billy you will later be glad you did , your trip will be on some of the best biker roads in the country , take your time and spend a couple of extra day's , Rt 50 will get you ready for Skyline Dr and the Blue Ridge Pkw

I live in Annapolis MD and drive to Beloit Ohio once a month, I took the PA turnpike ONCE! it was over 20 bucks in tolls, only two lanes, plenty of cops, lots of traffic and its not very pretty.

I now take 70 west, to 68 west, to 79north....then I either get off their in Washington PA (where 70/79) merge for a mile-ish and run the back roads over to ohio and run rt 11 up to some more back roads to my home town....its only about 30-45mins longer then the PA turnpike, however I run about 80-85ish on 68...its mostly 3 lanes, no more than 1-2 cops, lots of wonderful sights and stops, plently of exits for food....just watch Cumberland, the speeds drop to about 45 and theirs TWO sharp curves. you will mostly likey see a semi with its brakes smoking.

i also sometime run 79north to 376 north and get off their in Chippewa right before it turns into a toll.

Some of the roads in WV can be curvy and hilly but theres also some big highways. Definitely be sure to hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was just up there Saturday and I like it much more than Skyline. Also plan your gas stops because theres not a lot of places to get gas.
