Road Trip from NYC
Looking of taking a road trip from NYC this holiday weekend. Between 400 - 600 miles one way. Any suggestion? Was thinking Mrtyle Beach, Vriginia Beach, Outter Banks NC. Was maybe of thinking of saving going down south for the Fall and maybe head West this weekend. Any suggestions?

Watch the weather. A tropical storm is headed for the Carolina's right now and another one is churning in the gulf. Either could mess up the weather along the coast this weekend. Go inland, a ride through the Catskills, Adirondacks, Finger Lakes and western New York State would be my choice.

My counter to this is you'll be riding from one of the most congested areas to another congested area on relatively boring roads on a busy holiday weekend.

I'm not sure where in NYC you are but if you are looking for a nice ride and a good place to break in your new bike head up the Hutch to 684 north. Take 684 north till the end which is Rte 22 north. Then you can take Rte 22 or Rte 7 (Connecticut) up to Bennington Vermont and possibly over to New Hampshire.
I grew up in Queens and visit Long Island 3 or 4 times a year so I know how bad traffic can be. I can almost guarantee you that once you hit the end of 684 you will have little to no traffic (684 probably won't be too bad either). Rte 22 and Rte 7 are both very pretty two lane roads with speed limit of 55 mph which would be just right for breaking in your new bike. Rte 7 will take you along the Housatonic river thru Ct and Mass and the Berskshire Mountains. You could hit a little traffic in the Berkshires. I doubt you will hit any traffic if you stay on Rte 22 in NY. If you head into Bennington there is a great Fried Fish joint. The food is good and he gives all bikers a 10 or 20% discount. Then take Rte 9 to the scenic view of the Green Mountains. It is about a 20 minute ride.
I found this cool time lapse of rte 9 in Vt.

Take 80 west, and then head south on 99 at Penn State, to 68 at Cumberland MD. (68's a great ride for an interstate) Work your way to Clarksburg WV, and ride route 50 east all the way to 220, and then back up to Cumberland. I rode 50 in June, on the way home from my sister's in OH, and it was great. I'm goin' back. Twisties, mountains, horseshoe turns. Fantastic ride. When you're going down 99, stop in Altoona at Horseshoe Curve National Landmark. It's very cool. Google it to see what it is.
Also, over here in PA, anything west of 15, and north of 80 is great riding, with lots of things to see. PA Grand Canyon, Kinzua Bridge State Park, Kinzua Dam, Hyner View, Benezette PA to try to see the elk, Letchworth State Park in central upstate NY. Lots of good things over here. I don't envy you heading west on Friday! It won't clear up until you're WELL into PA, if it clears up at all. Hope you're leaving early on Friday --- or Thursday afternoon.
