Rentals and must ride roads in Hawaii
Would like to take the wife to Hawaii this winter and rent a couple of bikes while we're there...where is the best riding? Any recommendations on M/C rentals? Which islands would be best to ride? I understand Oahu is getting pretty bad for traffic...would island hop if there was a good rental and some nice roads

We rented a bike on Maui a few years ago. Basically two great roads to ride. The north coast and the road to Hana. Both were great, not a lot of traffic and plenty of views, curves and beaches to stop at. You could also ride to the top of the mountain to watch the sunrise. We opted not to do that, good thing too because the day we went in the rental car it was 36 degrees on top of the mountain!
Rt 30 goes from Lahaina to Kahului or vice versa. We road it in that direction, that way you are always on the hill side of the road and not the drop off to the ocean side. A narrow road in places but very little traffic when we were there.
Only thing we did wrong was we did not pack towels or wear a swimsuit under our jeans. We stopped at a lot of waterfalls and beaches but couldn't swim or get wet because we had nothing to dry off with or to change into.

Another vote for the Road to Hana. I rented a '14 Ultra in Kahului, Maui and road it start to finish. You'll have to turn and around and come back at the end because the road that continues on after the end isn't paved and is best tackled in a Jeep.
I didn't rent on any other island, but the big island had rentals also and had some beautiful roads. If you're going to O'ahu, I wouldn't bother renting. Too urban.

have not toured Maui to be sure.... have read that some of these roads are full of traffic. Probably depends on time of year.
Big island has lots of open roads. Bike rentals there as well. We enjoyed getting off the main hi ways and exploring. Just trying to complicate things with an option....

Maui - When we went to Hana we got deluged (roads closed and falling rocks deluged) so be careful - it's unpredictable. Haleakala would also be excellent. Oahu - the road to the North Shore is spectacular. Traffic isn't so bad and it's perfectly enjoyable most of the way. North Shore is my favorite part of Oahu.
Next time I go to Maui - Jeep. Word to the wise.
Edit - yes- bring swimsuit and be ready to stop everywhere!

On Oahu I rented a Heritage in Waikiki and took a day ride on the road around Diamond Head and then the Kamehameha Highway up the east shore to the north. Beautiful, not much traffic. Speed limit is low but that's okay because you'll want to putt along and enjoy the scenery. If you go be sure to get lunch at Giovanni's shrimp truck. And wear sunscreen. Lots of sunscreen. Or else. Worst sunburn I ever had but worth it.

Rented an H-D (Heritage) on Maui in '13. I wish I'd saved my money and taken a helicopter tour ... Seriously. But - I was there first week in June and every college student just starting summer vacation was there in a rental car and you couldn't get anywhere near any of the attractions on the road to Hana ... and the road was packed with people who drove like they were the only ones on the road - and anybody else just better get out of their way ... I decided that if I ever moved there I'd have to sell the bike on the mainland and just quit riding (and I've been riding since the early '60's) ... I had the bike for 3 days and returned it after 2 ..... Hated it - never again.
