I vote big for a shakedown cruise. Take a short one night trip if you have time to help finalize your gotta haves from don't really needs. There are lists on here as well as other sites that can get you started on what to bring. Cutting them down and how to pack is what you need and different for everyone.

As said, where you go makes a difference. Campground or roughing it? Somewhere to sit and comfy bed make a lot of difference in ok or nice night.... just saying

Ive done a lot of touring on my bike and have always camped, believe me you don't have to spend anywhere near $1,500 on gear to be comfortable.

To be honest, I did not spend that to be comfortable on my bike. My motorcycle camping gear, except for the collapsible cot, is what I put on my back when I go on long distance hikes. Where weight does count. And in that world, light is expensive, if what you want is to be comfortable at night. Especially when you get into high elevations.

The nice part, is that light usually equates to smaller gear. So it packs into a much smaller space.

And besides, I don't ride an expensive motorcycle, by expensive riding gear and take expensive holidays, to go cheap on any part of it.
