Default suggestions: cross country

Looking for suggestions for cross country routes. Planning to take 14 days off next summer and I need recommendations from Eureka, CA to NC. I'm currently looking at taking 299 out of Eureka to 44 on to Susanville, then 395 to Reno where I'll hit I-80. From there, I'm open.

This will be my first cross country ride: I may be solo or possibly one to two other riders with me. Would also like to know if I should plan this for May, June, July or Aug.

Multiple violent weather days in May,June across TN and NC. Would wait until the middle of July til the end of Aug. Then it will just be hot with some afternoon rain.

Truer words never spoken. I see you're in East Tn -- we may be riding a lot of the same roads. I'm in Crumpler, NC.

Cool 50

Take highway 50 east out of Reno, youll love that ride thru the desert.. As a matter of fact that highway 50 goes all the way to the east coast, DC I think is where it ends....alot more fun than the interstates, although Im sure it is part of interstate highways every now and then...

Actually Hwy 50 is a great ride and it runs all the way to Ocean City MD. I did that ride from Sacramento CA to Ocean City MD in 2009. I did the ride in June and got rained on every day once I got on the east side of the Rockies. Some severe thunder storms and hail too. The most boring part of the ride was Kansas but it was tolerable. I also rode from Sac. CA to Key West, FL. I did that ride in May of 2008. I had to change routes four different times due to the Tornados going through Texas, Oklahoma etc.
As was suggested earlier, I would wait until July. The biggest problem in July will be the humidity.
Good luck on your venture, it will be a great ride!

If the point is to go from A to B, then take 80. if the point is to tour the US you should look at alternates. I did 80 once and now regret not spending time touring.

Since you live in NC, what are you going to ship your bike to Cali. and then ride back to NC? If that is the case could you PM me and let me know the cost factor of that? Tryin to talk to the old lady into doing a long haul.

Most of I-80 through Wyoming is a straight, fast road, but not much to see. I-70 through Glenwood Canyon and into Denver is a lot prettier and more interesting ride
