Question Trailer question?

I would like to buy a trailer to haul my 2007 Ultra Classic. I've looked at the trailers at Lowes and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the 5x8 model? I would definitely support the deck with a marine grade 3/4" sheet of plywood and then have a wheel chock up front and then bolt some tie down's to the frame rails.

Has anybody used one of these, any feedback or recommendations? I don't want to spend an a.. load of money on a trailer either. I need to haul a riding mower around also.

Thanks, Jeff

how much you know about/have used trailers? Don't want to tell you loads of what you know. Longer is easier to back. Those tee tiny wheels don't like long distance hi way speeds. I did not look at the trailer you mentioned. Chock is a good idea. Higher sides make for easier tiedown and more protection.

A bit of advice, you sure you want to put $20k worth of bike on a $300 trailer? I did it when i was younger and poorer. Today it goes in the back of the truck and I think that is a lot safer all around. Spending some money on a quality trailer may have benefits in the long run.

That all said, I used one of the JC Whitney fold up 4x8 trailers for years. The original wheels did not like highway speed at all, make sure you get the biggest wheels you can find that fit. My trailer went to Florida from NY at least three times plus hauled a ton of crap around for over 15 years. My buddy now has it hauling scrap metal around.

I had my Wide Glide on it, not an Ultra, so I would look into load ratings for sure.

I was really concerned about those small 12" wheels also. I'm not going to consider that trailer then and will look for something more substantial, I plan on some longer pulls (couple hundred miles one way).

i would check craigs list (utility trailer) in your area. i picked up an "aluma 5410" aluminum trailer for $800 a few years ago. mine has a plywood floor tho. http://www.alumaklm.com/single-axle-...y-trailer.html

I would look at a 5x10, 8' might be a little tight.

I had one for a couple of years and it towed just fine. I did put 'Bearing Buddies' on the axles to make sure the bearings always had sufficient grease.

I ended up selling it because it was 8' length with a fold down ramp and was just a few inches short. I ended up modifying the trailer to make it fit. If the trailer you're looking at has side rails on it make sure to measure the length of your bike from the outer circumference of the front tire to the same on the rear tire, not where the tires sit on the trailer. There's a big difference in length between the two methods.

I kept my eye on Craigs list for a used Kendon trailer. I picked mine up for 900 and love the way it tows. I only use it once a year so. I needed one that I could store in my garage and still get my car and bike in.
