Default early 1984 FLT tour glide bottom end question?

I want to clarify that my 1984 FLT EVO has a shovel bottom end as far as I can see it does.It has a dry clutch Am I correct in saying it has a shovel bottom end? last time I knew and looked it was I was told by a tech at a parts manufacture company that an EVO will have an EVO bottom end yes it is an EVO but does it not have a shovel bottom end would like to know if I stand corrected here

I thought an evo bottom end had different lifters, flywheels and shaft tapers - nothing to do with the clutch. I don't know that there were any hybrid shov/evos made from the factory. Does the motor number match the frame? Joe

What he means is that some of the very first EVOs had a shovelhead bottom end and is looking for confirmation.
I heard that story as well, but don't have any data.
What do your lifter blocks look like?
I've seen late 84 EVOs with the correct EVO lifter blocks... maybe early 84 had also shovelhead blocks?

I found out it is not a true shovel bottom just looks the same so in a sense I am wrong.Flywheel, lifters, ect are different so I guess the answer is yes its an EVO bottom end but,,allot of parts that fit shovels fit it as well that's were I got confused

Shovels have cast iron cylinders with base bolts holding the cylinders to the block, evos have aluminum cylinders with cast in liners and studs thru the cylinders with nuts at the heads clamping the cylinder between the head and the block

Default Shovel bottom end

I also got thrown off by this site called roadglide.org first -years tour glide heres the link it also claims it is a shovelhead bottom end http://www.roadglide.org/showthread.php?t=15408

From 1979 to early 1984 the tour glide was powered by the Shovelhead engine. In late 1984 until 1996 the motorcycle was powered by the Evolution engine. The early 1984 models had a shovelhead bottom end with an EVO top end.

so in a sense it is and it isent I still want to call it a hybird HD dumped the shovel in 85 my bike was one of the first EVOs then about mid 84 to late 85 HD changed the bottom end completely

Well kinda...84-85 EVOs had shovelhead case castings that were machined for EVO top end...they even still had the oil passage to oil the shovel rockers...my understanding is they have the heavier shovel flywheels as well. Later they went to different castings that had the oil filter mount...not on the earlier EVOs.

Yea the bottom end is a shovel slightly modified to carry and run the EVO im getting educated online lol .So I will call it a shovelution and say its basically a hybrid.the bottom end is shovel crossed with some changes for the EVO I want to say the early 1984 FLTs are rare anymore I really dont see to many around but in any case im keeping it been putting allot of work into it.I know they weren't popular cosmetically because of the big square control gauge on the front and not on the tank.I really did not like it either at first I was going to change it but it really kinda grew on me after awhile. and its different I like different it catches looks. I never really liked having a Harley that looked like every other Harley on the road.I like being the odd ball. They did get good reviews back in the day
