Default Hydraglide fork harsh rebound

I recently acquired a 1948 panhead which as an aftermarket ( V-Twin , I assume) hydraglide front end on it for a 1967-1972 FLH. It has a wicked rebound clunk when hitting bumps or even when I apply the front brake and work the shocks by hand. I'm about to pull the legs off but before I do, I have a couple of questions.

What is the proper wt fork oil for this front end and how much of it is recommended?

Assuming the changed fork oil doesn't improve the situation, would the harsh rebound be due to internal springs which are too strong or too weak? ( I am guessing too strong).

Thanks.

May Not be aftermarket...some old ones do that ****...
I pull the lowers, pull the damper [out the top] and put a small spring...1/2 of a valve spring [inner] works. I put the spring on the bottom of the damper rod between the rod and lower leg...this cushions the "top-out".
Note...you will reduce ride height by at least the length of the compressed spring. No Sweat...that's how those cheap *** "lowering kits" work anyway....

Racepres--I'm a little confused as to where you install that spring. Do you remove the keeper from the damper rod and then install it on the rod next to the existing spring? Also, unless something is removed before you install the valve spring, why would it lower the front end? I'm missing something here.
