Default Looking to Buy a Shovel - FXR?

Hello all. I have been interested in a getting a shovel for a number of years now, and am considering looked at an FXR Shovel. I recall hearing that these are not the best bikes due to lack of available replacement parts. Is this true? What should I be looking for when I go see this bike?? I am a competent weekend mechanic so can identify obvious powertrain issues, but have no experience with shovelheads outside of what I have read.

Thank you.

Anything that can Screw-up/Wear out, can be replaced near as I can tell...Some will say a newer Tranny and Primary is very desireable anyway...IDK...

FXRs are the most modern of the shovelheads. That's either good or bad depending on your point of view. I loved mine and didn't have problems finding parts. But I love my FXS too...

Default Why conversion to belt primary?

I am looking at buying an FXR locally that has belt primary. What was wrong with the factory chain setup that people end up doing this? Ive had a TC FXD in the past and have an EVO FXDL now and find the chain primary to be a good setup.

Thanks.

If it has a belt, it may [probably also] have a Newer clutch [Primo/Revera I think]
Not really a bad thing. The Clutch Hub that you will probably find in there is easily split if the Key is allowed to extend Proud from the shaft slot. You'll find that it could be expesive to go back to chain from a belt...But, Someone may trade you...
Note that the Entire setup is the same as on a 4-Speed shovelhead, excepting the chain is a different length.

This is all assuming we are still talking about a Shovel FXR.
