Default WTF...Just happened...?

76 FLH,4 speed tranny. Decided to go for a putt a few days ago...Fired her up,did the usual warm up...sit on my stool, have a smoke while she's warming up.Gave a little twist of the throttle....half way down on the RPM'S, she lurched forward.I caught her before she fell...Died of course...Fired her back up,backed out of the shed,a trail of tranny fluid followed......She now has a 1 inch crack on the bottom of tranny.Stress fracture; or did the tranny let loose...?

1 in ch crack on the bottom of the tranny....pics would help.

Along studs for mounting, along mainsshaft? What you are giving here is pretty vague.

If you take out the primary chain, will the motor turn over.

Bike lurched forward because 'something' seized or 'locked up'. Figure that out and you have probably isolated the problem.

Don't think I would try to start it again without pulling the tranny, popping the lid and see what's going on. Maybe you chipped a gear, it fell off and got jammed initially in the gear set? Purely speculation though.

At any rate you need to take the gears out and have the box welded. That crack is not going to get any better, especially around the mainshaft.

Best place to get the tranny case repaired is Creekside Welding and Machining. Used them to repair my 49 heads and used them to fix the bottom of the tranny case.

Tranny case ...before. That corner had actually broken off and needless to say the stud fell out as well as all the oil in the case

After... can hardly tell it was ever repaired. There is just a slight color difference between the aluminum metals

Probably not the cheapest, but they are fair-priced, will give you and honest evaluation and turn around is reasonable.

Not sure if you have ever seen it but SuperCycle 1980 had an entire article on tearing down the tranny. I actually have the rag and dwonloaded a .pdf version I found elsewhere. If interested I can email you a copy if you send me your email address. O

Or, not sure what part of Kali you are in (POZO), but if near the Bay Area I can get it to you (advantage of retirement).

I'm thinking of just swapping it out with a kicker 4 speed, a brother I know has for cheap and a little trade.............As for where is POZO...It's about 25 miles North-East of San Luis Obispo Cali. Later... ROTTEN ROB..........

Wish I could help on this one, however I am curious what caused it. Post your findings would be appreciated.
Best of luck
