On the early style, my manual says the dot in the corner is 5 degree retarded. I put the dot in the center and did a static time with a new Ultima system and it runs good. Dot in the center is TDC from what I understand from my manual.

It might be a 10 degree swing side to side on the window...IDK, I guess alot depends on what side!
The opposite side of 10 degrees retarded, would be 10 degrees advanced!

Edit; I have always static timed to the advance mark...cause I have always used the Mechanical advance mechanism...I guess if I was to use the TDC static timing method...I would simply find TDC physically...A straw or such in the spark plug hole!!!!

When I put the new ultima in it said to put the cylinder to TDC so I went to the manual and the little dot in the corner said retarded five deg so I centered it and did it from there. Seems odd they would show a dot in that position though when talking about TDC and it being 5 deg out. None the less its starts fine and idles right down. On the weekend I installed a yost 1 inch spacer as well as Harley 3-4 plugs. Took it out yesterday for a few minutes and seemed to pull fine although im used to my 65 ironhead that has a lot better power to weight ratio. Im running 8.5:1 pistons bored 10 over, with stock cam and a good Super E with the power tube and spacer. Anyone know what kind of torque and or Hp would be considered normal for this kind of set up? Everything else is stock except for the ignition, pistons and carb.

I have never equated Horsepower numbers and Shovelheads..No Matter what ya do to it...Stroke it to the moon...A relatively small EVO is flat gonna spank ya... Don't tell anyone if it is a 1200 Girls Bike!!!!

I know what you are saying race, but you know I have a 1965 900 ironhead that will spank some evos too. Some of these old skoots are not slouches either but in the end, its really all about heart and soul and a pan, a knuck, iron, or shovel has all that. Something the new ones don't and that is what its all about for me anyway.

I was having the same problems with the rear cylinder misfiring and fouling plugs. I had recently installed Paughco duals and I just found that I had an exhaust leak at the rear head. I'm going to seal that up real good this time.
I'm trying to understand the concept of using the evo exhaust gasket. Is the evo gasket used alone, or with the shovelhead gasket? If you use both, which goes on the pipe first? What about using ultra hi temp copper rtv?

pjb, all I did was massaged the evo exhaust gasket over the pipe and then put a little of the copper rtv on the top of it and carefully pulled the pipe into place.

I have some pics of the '95 factory Evo in a Shovel frame on another computer. I will see if I can copy them tomorrow. You don't have to slice the frame. If you just clearance the rear downtube for the rear exhaust it slips right in. If I had a classic Shovel, I would rebuild. But this bike came this way. And I must say, it runs like a champ. You can replace the rocker cover gaskets, all of them, carefully. It works. I just installed a kicker today on the 4 speed. Used a 3/4"longer shaft for the kick pedal. Clears stock exhaust perfectly. This engine was a online auction site engine. $1500. Came with S&S Super E
