Default Center dash light 1974 flh

The dash has three red rectangular lights on it and two directional signal green lights above it on the dash The left is high beam, the right is oil and im assuming the center is neutral which I don't know if it ever worked or not. But after a good run today, it comes on and stays on in or out of gear. Just incase it was a voltage light I tested the alternator and its putting out 14.2 running so I know its not that. If in fact it is the neutral light, why suddenly would it come on and stay on? The bike has always started in or out of gear. When I shift it stays on as well. Goes off when I turn off the key.

Any ideas?

Randy

Check the terminal on the front of the transmission. It may have come loose and grounded itself. I believe it is a yellow wire.

I will do that. One thing however that is bothering me. I have never touched the dash lights or messed with their wireing. I noticed if I rev it up high it goes out almost as if its an oil light but the oil light on the dash is on until it starts then goes out.

Hard to say what is causing it. My guess is that you have an intermittent short to ground and when you rev it it may vibrate away from where ever it grounds itself.

Definitely some kind of short, when I wiggled a few wires underneath it went out. Where does the wire to the transmission go. I cant find any place where a wire goes on it. Not to mention I don't recall ever hooking or unhooking a wire from the tranny when I powdercoated the frame. its a ratchet top set up, if that's what its called

The sending unit for the neutral light is on the front of the ratchet lid about centered. The older sending units had two wires the newer type had one.
