Default Color codes on shovelhead cams

I'm restoring my 76 flh, I'need to replace cam, it ran good on this cam, but a lobe is flattening out. It has a H stamped it and has a black mark on it. What is it.

Sounds like you have a cam from an FLH rather than the FL cam. Twizted will probably jump in and tell you for sure.

I think I have a good one out in the garage if you are interested.

All I know is that the duration on this cam is pretty wide. Might be stock, but does not look like it. This is my 1st. tear down and I'm learning.

P.S. You might ask to have this moved to the Shovelhead Section

I just went out to the garage and looked. I must have let the cam I was referring to go with the bike. Sorry, I was going to ship it to you if I still had it.

Thanks for the replies. I've been a automotive mechanic for 47 years, and I'm learning from the bottom. This bike ran good before I let it set for 11 years. I'm determined to get this cool old bike going again. Uncle Larry, I'm new to this site and how would I move this to Shovelhead Section ?

H is a stock shovel cam, 1976 was the last year for the gear not to have a groove in its face as they changed it - harley early and grooved late cam gears are color coded and have a different diameter, i believe 5 or 6 were available BUT you can remove your cam gear and install it on a new cam or replacement - crane had but went under and they made new H cams, harley does not any longer - some times flea bay has New old stock

Andrews cams has a replacement in the A cam it has just a taste of more lift and duration NOTE - rocker arm ratio for a shovel is 1.43 so the cam looks big but it is not - shovel stock i forget but think its .390 or around .400 in lift and only 200 degrees of duration

the A cam idles exactly like a stock bike but has a better pull in 3rd gear getting on a hwy all cams for shovels come with a red gear and its smaller so you could have a ticking sound at speed as you have a larger black gear < i know i know but its how they do it

Pretty sure I have an early stock H cam in my stash from my 72 I'd have to dig a little to be sure, no idea what color code it has. Yours if you need it just PM me.
