Default 1977 electra glide charging system

You guys are going to get sick of all my questions. So I noticed the output of the charging system is about 12.6 volts at any rpm, seems a little low. I tested the stator and the manual said resistance between .2 and .4 ohms, and mine is .5 (hoping the extra resistance is in my cables), and it also said AC voltage should be 26-35volts, however, mine seems to put out more than that, when revved to about 3500 it's about 80 volts. The manual says to use a KNOWN good voltage regulator to swap out with the suspected bad one, but I don't have one. Just wondering if any of you have seen voltage numbers that high on your stators. I really don't want to plug a brand new voltage regulator into a bad stator and blow the regulator.

I also noticed that the lead coming off the voltage regulator is a negative wire, and the manual says it should connect to the positive terminal of the battery. When I found the bike it was unhooked, so I started the bike up and tested voltage and found it to be a negative. Wondering if that could mean the regulator is bad as well.

Any ideas?

The regulator is attached to the positive terminal. If you connected it to the negative or ran it disconnected it is probably bad now.

Check the battery voltage with the key off should be 12.4 to 12.6 or so then fire the bike and rev the engine with the meter still on the battery it should go up to 13.2 to 13.8 volts if it doesn't read anymore than the static battery voltage the regulator took a dump on you.

All this provided the checks you did on the stator are correct and they sound right just a little high on the top end they usually go to about 50v or so.

Yeah that's what I thought was weird, it's definitely putting out negative voltage though, and I ran the bike with it disconnected just to verify that. So if I get a new one I need to NOT test it while disconnected from the positive terminal correct?

Exactly what I did before testing the stator, it comes up to about 12.8, it's pretty low, so I'm pretty sure the regulator is bad. Thanks
