Default 82 FXR Question About Rear Wheel Bearing Seals

Started working on replacing rear brakes/rotors, and repacked wheel bearings. I noticed when putting new seals on that there is no shoulder that acts as a hard stop to position bearing seals. Anyways, after reassembling, I discovered that the seals are supposed to be pressed in 5/16" below the top of the hub. Is it critical that this be exactly right? I didnt check where I put mine, but I know that the spacer pilot diameter rides on the lip of seal. Should I take out spacers, and make sure the depth is exactly right??

Thanks alot.

they early hub had a snap ring and washer that install over the seal with captured spacer and you may have a later style - as long as the seal is flat to the end of the hub your good to go

Yeah no snap ring in this assembly. In terms of the seal, the manual I have says to press seal in 5/16" below top of hub. Wondering how critical it is to get this exact.

And...May I add? It is Much more important that it be Flat...not "cocked" in any way. The best reason to have a positive "stop", which is not Provided.
