Default Changing tanks. Advice please

I'm thinking of changing out the tanks on my '72 FX to something more chopper like. Obviously a Sportster tank is the tank of choice by many but I'm wondering about other options.
Also, I really hate to modify the frame much, any "bolt-on" options? I may want to convert back to stock someday.
And....it seems that most are mounted on the top frame rail, rather than over. I'm not sure that I like that much of the frame exposed. Opinions?

Thanks for any input.

You always bolt on a 73 and later FX turtle tank. It slips right over the frame without modification. They sell the bracket kits that mount to the existing rear tank mount. Look at the parts manual and you can see the parts needed to make it work. The rear is held on with a spring and the front slips under a pair of rubber ***** mounted in the neck area.

While I like the Sporty Tank...I have yet to get one low enough in the rear to suit me, without severe frame modifications...Or a modified sporty tank.
If you are OK with a bit higher in the rear...No problems...otherwise, yes the original SuperGlide Tank [Sportsters had the original "turtle tank"] is a good look I think...

I'm just a bit bored and am considering 3 gal bobs again!!!

Enjoy whatever you decide!!!!
But Be careful, like Me you may be changing from time to time!!!!

I know it's not what you're asking, but if I owned THAT '72, all I'd be looking for is an original front fender and be done with it. The longer you are into these older bikes, the more you will appreciate what you have there.

IMHO you've got a great looking bike there.

I have the original fender and 2 into 1 pipes. I will probably do that sometime. Right now I'd like to do a chopper look. But thanks for your input.
