Books like Road Trip USA, Great American Motorcycle Tours, Scenic highways and Byways.
And sometimes it's just looking at the road sign and going the road not taken.

So... here is what I want. "avoid highways". That nice function that GPS offers. No thinking, just does it. I hate riding on the interstate, especially on this thing. I rode 200 miles last weekend with a map. It wasn't fun. I was always worried that I would miss the next turn... Maybe I need to let go.

I get the GPS thing - it is good if you know where you want to end up at the end of the day and want to get there efficiently (avoiding highways). If I may make a suggestion for using an old fashioned map - stick some painters tape on your tank with turns listed in order. Then you aren't focused on the GPS and can enjoy the scenery, etc. I remember riding with a guy who's GPS told him a restaurant we were looking for was past their sign that I saw him ride right by...

Got a GPS for the wife (2009) to get from point A to B. When I ride, I study a map or even the internet, make a few notes, and head out. Stop at the local eat joint that has a bike or two and ask -"You have any nice rides here?" I have put one in my saddlebag, but only because one of my friends doesn't know North from South.
Enjoy the ride, however, I don't think I could read a GPS on my shovel.
