GPS on a Shovel
#2
I haven't tried it on a shovelhead but a GPS takes hardly any current to keep running...
The typical GPS or phone charger provides 1 amp at 5 volts which is 5 watts, which is the same as a dash bulb. That equates to 0.4 amps at 12-13v.
I also suspect if the GPS battery is fully charged it's half that.

Hmmm... Well. How else do you handle the need for exploration, wonderlust. I'm in the mountains, I lose cell phone reception at every corner. My GPS always works. The bike shakes and vibrates, but... I was thinking a foam padding and zip ties to reinforce the factory mount. I don't know... I get the bike integrity thing, I could use a map and a compass. But... does adding tech to a shovel really dehumanize it that much? So many resources at your fingertips v's shovelhead for the sake of shovelhead... I work in IT, I sit in front of 4 screens all day. I LOVE machines that function without a computer on board. I love that this bike is 100% mechanical, no PC. I hate the idea of shifting that. But... what do you do, I can't just "get lost" wonder around trying to find my way back... Suggestions?

Guy I've traveled 48 states, most all of Canada along the border and parts of Mexico on a shovel and damn little of it on the interstate with nothing but a map book and local guides to hidden tourist stuff, you'll do fine without a gizmo to lean on trust me it's part of the allure of discovery.
