Speedometer cable - how to disconnect transmission end??
What is the easiest way to disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission end (1972 flh)? Can it be done without removing the primary? Someone suggested a plumbers tool but that didn't seem to work. What is the trick here?
Thanks in advance for any help. It is very much appreciated.

The Threaded end cap of Part #17 should just unscrew from Part #32. Most of part #32 is not visible as it is inside the trans case.

The plumber's tool you mentioned is probably a basin wrench :

If you can't get the end cap of the cable unscrewed (it is awkward to get to behind the aluminum primary), you can just unscrew the small drive gear mounting screw and pull the drive gear straight out with the cable. Replace the thin paper gasket if it gets torn, otherwise you can reuse it. To reinstall, simply ease it straight back into the transmission case. It's not timed so you don't have to line the gear up in any way.
