I would like to get new handlebar controls for my stock bars. I want to stay HD and avoid the sh*tty replacement stuff. When looking at newer years, are there things I need to be aware of (eg. handlebar diameter, etc.) besides the obvious wiring differences?

Newer year handlebar controls (switches) will all be made for 1" bars. You may have to get bars with the wiring dimples though. If you go through that, I'd just go ahead and drill them out (or buy them that way) and run your wires internally.
