Default shovelhead project

Here's what it looks like today. Total bottom end done on motor.

It's a shame the speedo was left on a dirt floor.

Can someone tell me the correct orientation for the crankcase guard. Does is rest on top of the motor mount as in this pic?

or underneath the mount like this.

Thanks for your help

She's lookin 100% better already!!! Don't take any short cuts and you have one banging Shovel that will make folks drool. Now is a good time to polish your rockers, primary and cam cover. Keep the pics comin.

Sidecar- looking good so far. Nice work! To help with your question on the guard plate- I went out and looked at my bike. Mine is a 78 FXS. It didn't have one installed, but the motor is bolted directly to the top of the lower crossmember. I'm guessing that the plate attaches to the underside of the crossmember. Hope this helps and I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a definitive answer.

Scott, it makes sense that the plate should be on the bottom of the cross member but it seems to fit better with it resting on the top, I doubt that the motor would rest on top of the plate, just want to be sure.

Thanks

I just ran out to the shop and checked that skid plate. On my 73, it sits under the frame.

The build is looking fantastic. I got a shiver up my spine when I saw what the inside of the outer primary looked like. Was that bike in a fire or something before you got it?

Skid plate goes under the motor mount and scrap the paint off both the engine and trans mounting points before you assemble things, it'll save you future headaches with loose hardware & vibration.

PS welcome to the brotherhood partner my sig bike started life the same way in the same condition .

A little off subject but I am sure that that "square" tire in the original photos would have made you crash and burn................CT humor.

Follow the "Darkside" threads and you will understand my humor. Many say a bike tire MUST have a rounded profile or you will crash and burn.

Back on topic.OP, good luck with your build.
