Quick question, I have the rocker covers attached to the heads, can the rear head be installed on the motor with the motor in the frame?

Yes just make sure the pistons down in the cylinder or it won't clear.

Yes, I thought it should be straight forward but it won't clear the frame. It looks to me like the thickness of the powder coating is whats stopping it.

Got it, pulled out the motor mounts and slid the motor to the right about 3", put the head on and slid it back in. Solutions are sometimes so obvious you can't see them.
Thanks,

Default shovelhead project

Still working on my 1980 FLHP basket case. I just can't sort out the clutch hub and clutch shell. Do I understand the workings of this clutch? The problem I'm having is that the clutch shell (belt drive set up) rubs against the inner primary. The clutch hub has a friction plate which I assume matches up to the rear of the clutch shell.
There is no friction plate on the back of the shell, just bare metal. If I lay another friction plate over the one on the hub the shell clears the inner primary and both the clutch shell and motor sprocket line up correctly. It seem as though the clutch hub should be shimmed out the thickness of a friction plate but no shim is possible behind the hub as far as I can tell. I'm at a loss, doesn't make any sense to me, but I am going senile. Any thoughts please?

The clutch hub should have a riveted friction plate facing the basket

This ...

A rare few of the aftermarket clutch kits came with a floating nylon gizmo that replaced the riveted one, not common but I haver run into a few over the years.

Thanks for the replies. I do have the friction plate riveted to the hub, the problem is that the clutch shell doesn't make good contact with the plate because the backside of the shell rubs against the inner primary. Damn photobucket, I have to find a way to post pictures to make it clearer as to what the problem is.

Ok, I've found an alternative to photobucket. I've been going on about how the clutch shell is rubbing against the inner primary. This photo shows where its rubbing.

This photo shows the inner primary, turns out its not the correct one for this bike.

This is one of the many problems I've encountered putting this bike back together, a lot of the parts in this basket case don't belong.
Now I have to find the correct inner primary, more expense. Anyway, here's how far I've come with this project.
