Default Electrical hard down, need advise

I have a basket case 75 FXE that I built back in the 90's, it's been sitting since 2004 when I gave up on it but couldn't bear to part with it.

The last time I rode it I had to trailer it home because of electrical problems. So here's what happened, after about 45min on the toll road hitting it pretty hard we pulled off and shut down to have a cocktail. When I tried to fire it back up the starter only clicked so I push started it and made it about a quarter mile before the head light went extremely bright and then real dim followed by the engine losing power I tried to fluctuate the throttle to keep it running the engine backfired and everything went dead.

I've been told that the voltage regulator blew and the stator sent AC through the system, if thats true what and how do I test to confirm the extent of damage.

Clean all electrical connections in the starter circuit and the starter relay/solenoid circuit.

Install a good battery (a good, load tested battery).

Start the engine and perform a charging system test.

When you replace the stator/voltage regulator, be sure and upgrade using a CycleElectric system. And upgrade to a 32 amp set up as well. American made and well worth the money spent.

Electrical department isn't my forte but had somewhat the same issue with my old Yamaha, ended up being the rectifier. The smallest hairline crack & poop it went. Good luck, keep us updated.

Take a hard look at your battery, the older acid batteries would boil out the acid and the electrical system would got wonkers like you just described. My headlight would act like yours every time mine got low. Your 75 runs the same 4 pin stator reg my 72 did. AGM battery only way to go now.

Little update. New parts list: Odyssey AGM battery, All ***** starter solenoid, and last but certainly not least a Cycle Electrics 38amp 3 phase stator kit. (Includes stator, rotor, regulator) the most up to date stator Cycle Electric offers. While I had the primary apart to change stator I decided it was time to address the gearing choice made in the past and go lower ratio, 22t on eng, 23t trans, 49t wheel. Now waiting for the new 80 link Diamond primary chain to be delivered because the old one was to long even if it wasn't worn out. Thanks Panz4ever for the Heads up about Cycle Electrics, seems like really quality stuff.

For the 22 tooth motor sprocket you could have just used the alternate mounting points on the tensor and used the stock chain. It tells how in the manual.
