71 Shovel Will not start
Alright I have a 71 Shovelhead... I love this bike but I can not get it going... I just replaced cam and pistons did a complete rebuild. After I put fresh gas and oil did all the adjustments and kicked it over nothing. My carb shot out flames, smoke came out of the exhaust, got good spark...She sounds like she wants to go but nothing. I have an electronic ignition on it and at this point I am lost... Please help... Thanks

Did you replace the cam with an OEM cam or a bigger one? Are you running hydraulic or solid lifters?
If the cam islarger then OEM your push rods maybe to long. Just enough to prevent the valves from seating. Causing backfires and running like sh%t. Do you have a compression gauge? If not the 'ole fingure over the sparnk plug hole trick will work. Let us know how it turns out

The push rods are adjustable for both hydraulic lifter set up and solid lifter set up! There is a world of difference on that adjustment between the two systems Better pull out the push rods and see if those cups that hold the push rod coming out of the lifter bodies have compression springs underneath indicating hyd lifters Keep us posted

You may try starting from the beginning and double-check everything. Make sure cam is indexed correctly, adjust pushrods, clean, inspectand adjust carb, check for good spark, set initial timing and try again. Sometimes it's the simple s**t that trips you up.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Throwing in my 2 cents. If you crank on it for very long when you do get her going turn her off and pull the plugs and let her air out.
Back to the lifters do you have the hydraulic conversion set up? http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup...All&page=1
You still have to adjust them just like solids.
Keep us posted. We'll get it figured out.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]
