What model, B,E,G?? Stock ignition or electronic and have you verified the timing is right? Have you ck,d for intake leaks? I ran a "B" for years, always had a problem getting the intake to seal right, had bands instead of O-ring,s, changed over to O-rings which solved that, never liked no accelerator pump so swapped for an "E", love it.

One more thought, if you have an accelerator pump it may be set too strong dumping more than you need when twisting up on hills, try backing it off and see what happens.

I had an S&S Model "B" on a 1982 FXR Shovel. It was OK, but needed too much care to dial it in. And when I went up to Tahoe, it would sputter and have no power. So I changed to a CV carburetor. It was like night and day. No more gas smell. No more fiddling with the jets. No more loss of power.

Have someone ride behind you to see if black smoke is visible when this sluggish condition takes place If there is drop the main jet down a size

What is your elevation? When I was out west with one of the older low compresion shovels I found out how important elevation was.I was running a 1974 shovel all stock internally with a S&S E and a exhaust with mufflers. With just me on the bike it was Okay, with a passenger it needed help.I called S&S back here in WI and they walked me thru a few mods that helped!
