Just thought I'd post up a few preliminary pics of the new scoot. Picked this one up for $3,500. Haven't started it yet but when I kick it the engine feels tight. I certainly hope that's a good sign. I'm mechanically inclined but don't know $hit about these shovels. I will be buying the factory manual (saw one on eBay) to help me through this. I have lots of questions and I'm hoping I can find some answers here. Up to now I've owned one Evo powered Softail, and Evo Ultra, and a TC88 FLHR. I'm currently on an '09 FLHX and I love that ride. I've been wanting a vintage, shovel powered Superglide for many years and I think I got a pretty good deal on this one. I plan to remove the bobtail rear fender and replace it with a standard super glide fender. Tanks and fender will be painted denim black. Looks like I might have some work to do with the wiring so if anyone has any pointers to help me out I'd appreciate it. I can't tell what type of carb is on this bike but I'm thinking Bendix. It looks like the inner primary is new and that it's a separate oiling system. I'm ordering new gaskets so that I can pull the cover and have a look-see. Front brake is kaput and rear brake drags heavily. Stock 19" laced wheel up front with a solid disc (16") rear (fatboy?)... I'm really hoping that once I change oil, primary, and tranny fluid, clean the carb up really good, and install a new battery, that this thing will fire up. Thanks for letting me share!

Check your title against your VIN, unless someone swapped tanks and gauges, that bike is actually an FXEF:

FX was SuperGlide, peanut tank, handlebar gauges and kick only
FXE, same as above, add electric start
FXEF, all of the above, add 3.5 gallon fat bob tanks and dash gauges

I've got two 1979 FXEFs, one is an early 79, 74"er, the other is late 79, 80"er. Love 'em both!

If it runs you did good for $3,500!

 

Looks like you got a very nice deal there. See in a couple of pics you have the officialMoCo ball-been hammer ready for action. Can't own a pan or shovel without one!

 

Hey frog13, thanks for the info. I'm not sure about the FXEF designation, though, because according to what I've read, the FXEF was only available as an 80incher in 1980. Furthermore, if you take a look KBB.com for H-D values, the 1980 FXE is listed as having a 1200cc motor while the FXEF is shown to have a 1340. Here's the link:

I'm not sure if that means anything but it's a start. I'll check the VIN and see if I can trace that down. I'm pretty sure the first 2 characters for an FXE should be D9 (for 1980 models). It was different for the 1971 to 1977, and 1978 to 1979.

 

But I wouldn't be surprised of the tanks and gauges were swapped as the bike came to me with a bobtail fender.

 

Somebody else can chime in, I thought 1979 was the last year for a 74", but I've been wrong before. I wouldn't count on Kelly Blue Book for that info, though. If you hear, let me know.

 

First 2 digits of VIN:
5E = FXEF 74"
6E = FXEF 80"
9D = FXE 74"
6G = FXE 80"

Last digit of VIN:
9 = 1979
0 = 1980

 

Can't really see the carb, but from the front it resembles a S&S "B". Got a better view? /b

 

yep it look like you might have gotten a good deal - now that you have that shovel - you just might have take things apart a few times - dont let the oil leaks get to you - its a shovelhead just marking it spot - ride my 75 to work every day - unless it wants some love (garage time)
