Default Crane Hi-4E in a Shovelhead?

Has anyone installed a Crane Hi-4E ignition in a Shovelhead? The Crane Hi-4 in my cone burnt out and I was given a good one but needed to buy the Evo pick up for the cone. I will need to cut the connector off of the Hi-4E and solder to the pick up wires (Red, Green and Black). Has anyone else done this conversion?

Thanks!

I have a '78-1/2 shovel that i converted to Crane Hi4. Apparently, it burnt out. My ole school mechanic buddy offered me a Crane Hi-4E, which he said is the same as mine just a remote mount. He also said that I needed the stock pick up too. He told me that I would solder the three pick up wires to the HI-4E wire harness. Was just wondering if anyone else has done this? And what functionality would I lose as a result of not having all of the 7 or 8 wires on the module not connected to anything. I saw that the install instructions actually discusses how to install it on an older bike.
Thx,
Dom

I have the Crane HI-4E on my 1982 shovel. It has been on it for 12 trouble free years. Just add the plug in wire harness, attach the module to the frame mount on your bike if it has one and plug it in. I added a VOES and it runs great.

I have the single fire coil and I run single fire multi spark setting. My timing is set to pot 9 and there is no pinging.

I ran without the voes, but it runs best with one in the system.

You will need the gold 1983 timing cup.

Don't cut the wires. Buy the adapter plug that plugs into the HI4-E. E is for external.

INSTALLATION ON 1984-1990 MODELS
WITHOUT IGNITION PLUG
1. These models did not have a plug at the ignition module.
To install the HI-4E model 8-3100, you will require
H-D® ignition module adapter wiring harness kit P/N
32408-90. This part is not included with the HI-4E and
can be purchased from your local dealer. Follow the
supplied instructions to upgrade your wire harness for
plug-in ignition. Turn ignition switch off and disconnect
battery ground cable before starting the installation.
Refer to Figure 1 for an overview of the ignition system.
2. FL series Big Twin models prior to 1985 will require
changing the timing rotor (refer to Figure 1). You must
install H-D® P/N 32402-83. After the HI-4E installation
is complete, you must reset the ignition timing. Refer to
your service manual or the information on page 5.
3. The O.E. ignition module is usually located under the
seat, under a side cover or on the frame below the handle
bars. Remove the O.E. module and remove the two
mounting bolts.

Thanks AJ. I was going to add it to my wiring harness, but i guess i can buy the harness to simply plug into the module. i have a crane hi-4 but iut burnt out and was given this one to use. i also have added the VOES with my crane hi-4. That seemed to help out a lot.
