i have a 76 fx and for some dang reason the 1 pushrod tube leaks sometimes and then sometimes it doesn't. i tried the neopren gaskets and it did the same. I took them out tried the cork gaskets and it did the same. So i went and bought another pushrod tube and it did the same. I dont know where else to turn. Please help

 

I don't know which tube it is, but I would check and see if the said tube is out of round and not sealing (bent). Second, I would check to make sure you don't have a cork or o-ring in there that you are trying to stack on. Third, I would see if the lifter block is draining. The drain hole should be centered between the two lifters, intake and exhaust of each cylinder. (look in your shop manual)
Start simple and move to complex.

 

66-79 use the cork washers. Might be better products out there but I have had good results with the cork.

And when was the last time you changed out the springs? Thinking if not in a while then the tension on the tube and upper clip is not there anymore and oil, always looking for a place to go to, leaks past your seals because the spring is weak.

 

Thanks for the help guys. I will definatly check the drain hole between the lifters as because thats where it leaks and i will change out the spring and see if that helps. I will keep you updated as soon as i get a chance to get to it

 

i think theyre called buna o rings but i could be wrong, the square o rings work great and last longer than the corks, i have the same issue for a while, replaced the spring and put the rubber rings in and problem stopped

 

I have numerous leaks on my '76. The problem is cleaning. If you just stop cleaning, the engine just gets covered with oil, attracts dust, and pretty soon you can't tell it is leaking.

 

Don't have the cheap big fat aluminium pushrods do you ? If so those are notorious for flexing and rubbing the tubes causing lots of noise and leaks .

 

I have used regular black o-rings that you get at lumber yards for years with no problems. When I first started using them I was warned that they probably would not last because they may not be resistant to oil. For me they go in easier, last longer and work better than anything else. Cheap cost, too.
