Post Handlebar wiring

Hi all, new guy here. After looking for several months, I just picked up an 82 FXRS. It's in good shape overall but does need a few things. I'm a decent wrench for an amateur, but I'm new to Harleys. It has a set of mini-apes that I can't use as I've dislocated my right shoulder three times and it doesn't go that high comfortably. Plus they're bent, the PO dropped it.

He did have an extra set of bars that are lower and I was going to put them on. The wires run through the bars, and I don't understand how to remove them. They seem to be soldered to the switches on the controls and they run through the headlight housing to a large connector that would not fit through the housing or bars. Do they have to be cut? I don't think these are the original bars, but the wires don't appear to have been cut and spliced before.

Here's my new toy :-)

The wires will come out of the connector...they make a special tool to do it, but most people use a tiny screwdriver or paperclip. be sure to make a diagram of how they go before you take it apart. Good Luck...great looking bike.

J&P sells the pin connector tool. Think it is still pretty cheap. Better than a screwdriver IMHO (right tool for the right job saves a lot of grief).

Pretty clean looking bike you have.

Thanks panz, I just happened to be ordering some baffles from J&P. I see the tool, for 12 bucks it's worth it.

Take your time removing the pins. You might want to order extra pins in the event you pull the wire out of a few. I know this because........
