Default removing the oil tank...

starting to get all the "stuff" out of the way to make changing out the battery/starter/solenoid cables easier......so figured I'd go ahead and change the leaky oil line that connects under the oil tank.

But,, I'm having a bit of trouble getting that tank out. I'm hoping someone has been down that road and can give me a few pointers. I'm way past being embarrassed about not being the sharpest tool in the shed.

better to ask than to do something stupid.

thanks,
marion..

Good jump suit to keep you clean and this will work.

Need to pull primary, starter housing and take it out the left side of the bike; otherwise there is not enough clearance

mmm... do you mean the primery inner too?
I think probably just sterter housing would do.
Empty the tank, take al the caps off and detach the lower oil lines
Maybe the coil bracket too
Anyway... I can't believe it was designed that way!!

With my 84 FLH (and I think this is what OP has) I indeed have to pull the complete primary along with the starter unit in order to get the battery box out. Just not enough clearance. Don't honestly remember if the manual says that is needed (or not) and having had to pull the the tank on my 65 only required what you describe above.

Both bikes are stock configuration, never been modified ...frame, engine, tranny. Took the 84 out when I got it in order to thoroughly clean the inside of the tank as well as to pop the top on the cowpie in order to inspect the tranny.

What Panz said unless your willing to mark some stuff up or bend a few things on the FL's , sometimes on the FX bikes you could wiggle them around a bit and snake one out but usually the rear fender or inner primary comes off .

Take off all the rubber isolators, and like everyone else says, pull the inner primary, OR, replace the bottom line with the tank in the frame. With the isolators removed, you can jiggle the tank around and get to the line.
