is it ok to run the oil pump dry without starting it, so all the old oil is purged

 

Unless you open the pump you'll never get one dry , there's always going to be some oil in nosecone & crankcase . Some guys used to put a qt of new oil in start them at an idle for 30 seconds and then drain to flush it , but honestly it's way overkill .
