First time poster long time viewer. I'm installed a new Ultima programmable ignition in my 84 Shovel. It's got .30 over dual plug heads, simple wiring and is kick only with Super E carb. The Ultima ignition kit came with a single fire 3 ohm coil. Since I have the dual plugs, I thought I could just order a second coil exactly like the one that came in the kit and run jump wires to the second coil but the Ultima wouldn't work that way. I also tried grounding both coils and still nothing. Has anyone tried this with this type of setup or do I have to break down and buy the 4 tower Dynatek coil or the two overpriced twin coils? I am running the bike now with only 2 plugs and it's ok, but I'd rather run all 4. I had a Crane Hi-4 with the 4 tower coil on it before and she ran like a beast until the coil crapped out on me which led to the new setup.

 

it should work i have done it before - any same type 2 terminal 3 OHM coils will work including oem

the colors go like this

violet is the -- VOES switch violet wire

green goes to -- tach pink wire

pink goes to -- one term on one coil ( does not matter what one as long as you use the same one on both for the trigger )

white is 12 volts in power to bikes white wire for both coils same terminal

blue -- is the other trigger wire to the other coil same side as the other trigger wire

this is for single fire its different for duel fire i gussed you wanted single fire -- jz

 

Thanks. I have two 3 ohm coils but they have 3 terminals. I wonder if that's my problem. I have another pair of 2 post coils. I'll try them like you said.

 

two post coils are for stock 2 plug harleys OR when you have duel plugs - they can be wired for duel fire or the single fire set up like i had sent you --

three wire coils are for 2 plug single fire apps only - you can get them to work but the wiring is different than i sent in the other responce -- and they overheat and burn out in short order --
