Default 1978 fx. Backfires and misses.

Start with what we have done

New coil.
Fixed air leak on intake.
New plugs.
New plug wires.
Everything to do with points is brand new.
Ss carb has been gone though and adj.

New plugs were black after 20 miles of riding. Today rode it and about 20 min into the ride she started popping. Then snap pop no power then runs ok then back to crap. Missing bad. big bang backfire. Last time I road almost 20 miles before problems came back. Blows fire out pipes also.

you did not say what the jetting is in the carb - to me its too rich --

you did not say if the carb is new to the bike after install its doing this

more specific detail is needed

it could be the acc pump is so fat its drowning the motor at each throttle turn -m How many turns is it out from the stop ?????

it could be the low speed jet is way to rich -- what number is it

Ss carb came with bike. Bought it this winter. Hasent run right since ive had it.
If I open up the throttle it sounds like fireworks pop pop pop. Dont know about how the mech has the carb set. He did the work and after he was done it ran perfect for about 2 days then back to ****. Ill find out the jet size on carb.

Hasn't been right since day one I'd be checking the advance unit behind the points plate and toss the cheap black one get a decent SS / bearing unit . Look into the port on the heads are valve guides wet & oily looking ? Guides do come loose and oil gets pushed around them fouling new plugs and making the bike act just like what you say , I see a couple a year like that .

Do you know the history of the bike ? Had the nosecone been off ? Could be a tooth or two off on the cam gear also I've had Andrews cams new outa the box be as much 40 degrees out of time so new don't mean right .

well unless the guy is a total %hit you should be able to bring it back and have him look at it again -- you did pay him for his help and expertise and it does not sound like you have the machanical ability to correct it from this point foward yourself

bring it back ------ if you know someone else that uses his shop have them come with you when you drop it off - no real shop owner wants to leave a paying customer to fend for themselves with an issue - its just not good for business
