Starters. replaced bendix gear and put it back together.hit the starter button and you can hear the jackshaft spin but it seems like the bendix is not engaging the ring on the cllutch basket. I'm at a loss. any help is appreciated

 

Check your starter solenoid.

 

OK.. so not to open a new threat here I go
82 FXRS, so 5 speed, not 4.
Starting system should be very similar to 4 speed though
It was starting and cranking fine until 2 days ago.
Now it's hit or miss wheter engaging or gust the starter spinnig freely, not moving out the gear.
Checked the solenoid yesterday and it had the plastic cover where the cables go cracked. Repalced it with an OEM HD one (made in the 90's)
Same issue.. maybe even worse.
Bendix?
Cables?
ground?
I have not checked the batt, but it did it the first time while using the bike, so the charging system was working
