starter has been giving me fits . sometimes the bendix dosnt line up with the ring gear properly and it makes a hell of a grinding sound . i replaced the bendix but same problems. dosnt do it all the time though. when i had the outer primary off it looked asthough the starter jackshaft didnt line up well with the hole in the inner primary. its just a hole and the starter shaft goes though it into the starter could this be alighment issues with the tranny and starter on the inner primary causing the jackshaft not to be centered in the hole properly . whats throwing me off is the inner primary bolts up fine to the engine and tranny. all those bolt holes line up perfectly. thanks for any advice guys

OEM or after market outer primary ? Outfit called Lifeline makes trash for the old shovels and there's tons of it still running around the market . Sounds like an alignment issue and some aftermarket outer primary's do not line up correctly & binds the shaft . You can try loosening the primary bolts a bit and try it , see if it helps .

figured it out seems there is a thick gasket that should have been infront of the starter drive gear housing so i just used some small washers to move it back from inner alittle and then used silicone gasket material to seal it up and now it works perfect and the starter shaft now fits inside the hole better . hit and miss when you get a basketcase bike some parts are always missing lol thanks everyone for suggestions
