Default Gear matching for 1975 FLH

I have a 77 camshaft on a 1975 motor. How do you tell if the gears match? Color code worn off and no stamping I can see.
As a background, I bought this as a basket case and have assembled it myself. It had several noises that I worked out....all except this one last
Can't seem to find the problem...any feedback wld be appreciated.
Thanks, Ernie

You have to use caution in 1977 they changed the pitch of the gears so unless you use them as a set, pinion, cam, breather you will grind them to junk.

the 1977 and later cam gear has a groove in it on the face of it - that is so you can ID it from the early one that does NOT have a groove its just flat machined on the face

you can scribe marks on it back side of the gears Key slot, and swap them out but you must put it back exactly so the cam timing is the same

what cam is it you have what are the numbers - who made it - johnjzjz
