Default Ignition timing cover riveted on?

I just bought a 1982 fxr shovelhead and I am trying to remove the ignition timing cover. I thought it was a stripped out Allen head but I think it's a rivet. Do I just drill it out? If so, where can I find a decent cover with Allen keys?

Thanks for the input.

It's been a long time since I messed with a stock set up. I believe under the riveted cover is an inner cover held on by screws. Just use longer screws to screw the new cover to the inner cover.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I was going to do an electronic setup. Any recommendations on brand?

You can reinstall that one, but if you don't reuse the inner cover it will turn 90 degrees and may not look correct depending on the cover. Originally, big twins had vertical holes, and sportsters had horizontal holes when they where riveted on ...so if you use a sportster cover on a big twin it will look correct, and you don't need the inner cover.

Got it. I had also seen the full crane setup which uses s&s parts or the accel setup.

I went with the ultima. The module can be purchased seperately for about $100. Then you can run any 3 ohm coil you prefer. Single or dual fire. It's actually just a re-badged Dyna 2000i. The modules are identical and produced by the same company. Great deal.

Is there any benefit to a dual vs single fire ignition setup? Is it pricier?

The same ignition can be set up for dual or single fire. The difference lies in your choice of coil. I've read that there are advantages with going single fire vs wasted spark. I set mine up dual fire because I had just purchased a new coil prior to upgrading my iggy. I'll probably go single fire mode next time I need a new coil.
