Default clutch issue

got a new clutch, new cable... I go by the book.... loosen cable, loosen clutch adjuster lockdown nut.... turn adjuster in until it seats, backout about 1/8 to 1/4 turn, then set the cable until I get about 1/8" freeplay. All seems fine for a bit, then fairly quickly, I loose all tension on the cable, so now there's an inch or so of freeplay. Ive taken it around the block before this happens, and its happened before I get out of the driveway. What could be wrong?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

It's possible the locking nut was not torqued or loosened up, allowing the adjustment screw to back out. Another, is the new plates had to clean up and settle in, requiring readjusting everything. Check that the throwout bearing is not damaged. Lastly, if the main clutch nut on the trans shaft has loosened the whole clutch would move out on the shaft creating the symptoms you describe.

Good Luck!
