Just replaced my father in law starter on 83 (I think). The problem pre-replacement was a not start, click at the starter relay. What seem like a solution is I squeeze the relay and it turns over, he didn't have a replacement just the one that was riveted to bike and the one plug in and both seem to start once squeezed. In my hating electrical mind I would say replace the relay but I have a feeling there something else any idea?
the fix is to replace the original relay if the bike has run on issues ( starter sticks on and wont stop ) than another mod is available - but yours does not sound as if it does

Thanks john no it doesn't run on. I've read a post about that I'll try a new relay. See if that solves the problem
FWIW...the starter relay isn't riveted to the bike. Also, the replacement relay will most likely be new and contain 5 prongs. I have to assume your relay has only 4. The 5 prong relay will work. Just don't use the middle prong.

I will post a pic this one is pop riveted to the bike I know I thought it was strange too. The one hang off that using now is five prong can that give a faulty relay?
If I understand what you are saying...you have 2 different relays that click when you push the start button, but work when you help them buy squeezing...I would say you have low voltage from the starter button to the relay.
