Default Starter turns but motor doesn't

Okay so I hooked up a charger to the 72 project...no battery yet.

Tried to see if she would turn over on her own (engine is free). The starter turns however the engine does not.

Is this normal if there is not enough voltage/amperage (no battery just 12 v charger) or should I order a Bendix?

I've ordered a bunch of parts...just getting antsy!

Thanks!

I`ve never tried that, but yea i doubt that it would work off a charger, you need some
amperage to crank it over.

Thanks for the reply.

I will wait for a battery before I worry about the starter then.

Starter ring could be loose on the clutch basket, they will just spin around the clutch basket when the engine is cold. When the engine heats up, it works fine, cold you got a problem. Easy fix.

You bring up a good point APD...I have a problem finding neutral too...the clutch doesn't seem to disconnect the power from the wheel.

Should this bike be 1 down 3 up or 1 up and 3 down?

In any case I am hoping getting it running after 23 years will "fix" these issues. Only time will tell.

Get a battery in it then try, does the bendix pull into the ring gear ? if so do you hear any hashing or grinding sounds ? If anything it will be a bendix or the solenoid, ring gears will loose teeth, yet to see a stock one slip they are welded on.
