Default LowRider S engine 110 or 120ST

My engine has gone out on my LRS and will be replaced by Harley at their expense. It seems that I might have a choice to go back with the same SE110 or the 120ST. I was thinking about the 120R, but not having any warranty is an issue. The only thing I plan to do performance wise is a tuner and exhaust. Might consider adding SE roller rocks and S&S lifters in the 120ST since I understand this is their weak spot over time.

what would you all choose and why?

appreciate the input.

So what was the problem on the 110" Motor? How many miles? Lifters, crank.?

I'm not an expect or a engine builder, but there have been some folks that have run the 120R/ST. Hopefully they will chime up.

As for the 110" motors. As of late, it seems like a bunch of late model year (2014+) motors going sour with little to low milage.

I for sure would get the ESP, if I were you.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Default 110 to 120

Not totally diagnosed yet by them, but they suspect crank might be root cause from noise, been through three compensators in 1200 miles so far. Gets very hot in only around 30 minutes. Been an issue since new, only 1500 miles currently

want to be ready with a choice if they come back that it needs replaced.

What about having them give you another 110 along with a 117 upgrade kit for your troubles?? You should be able to get that 117 kit included in an extended warranty plan. So you could be covered for 5 years vs the 1yr limited warranty that comes with the 120st

I was going to suggest what "MatteGlide" has mentioned above.

However, when I did my engine build last winter, I sent my Bottom End to Dark Horse to get blue, trued, balanced, welded, and added a SE Timken Bearing when I got it back from DH.

In addition, everything inside my motor (all moving parts) is brand spanking new. I did elect to replace the cam/lifters for GMR Preformance stuff instead of SE 259s and their well known damaging SE lifters. Even added a new comp sprocket.

I might have over done, but it made sense while I had the engine apart. My motor NOW starts up on the first crank, shifts and runs as smooth as butter!!!

This winter I'll be taking my heads out and get them P/P for my winter project.

I will agree that with all the problems that you have had in such a little time period and low milage, the MoCo better step up!

Keep us posted.

Default 110

I like that suggestion of getting the 110 and have my dealer do the 117 upgrade. They should at least cover the cost of the upgrade labor costs for my troubles, that's around $2000.

I am going to press for HD upstairs giving me an extended warranty. I do like my dealer alot, Cajun HD, they have been extremely good over the years for any issues I have.

"So your suggestions I should go back with the 110 instead of doing the 120 upgrade, even if I don't do a 117 upgrade - correct?

This is JMHO.

You purchased the LRS because it's a Badazz bike and it came with the same motor as the CVOs, not to mention It's the biggest MoCo motor other then the 120R/ST!

You get your bike and it's simply awesome. Then you have problems, then you have more problems, then engine needs to be replaced.

SINCE, your Dealers is taking good care of you and offering either a 110" motor or 120" motor but the catch is with the 110" you can go up to 5 more (ESP) years, and then do it again IF your under 75K mile. Now you have a 7 yr plus a nother 5 Year if you wish. Total 12 yrs of ESP.

120ST = 1 year warranty.

IF your dealers is really cool, maybe suggest the 117" motor with the same Warranty And the same ESP as the 110".

The jury is still out on the longevity of the 117" motor upgrades. Truthfully, there hasn't been one reported to them coming apart yet and come January, it would have been one year.
As for power, some of the boys with the Stock 117" parts and using the supplied SE 259 cams are getting 118 HP & 127ish TQ!

I think that pretty good numbers for a stock MoCo motor and pretty damn close (I have to think) to the MoCo 120ST motor. Again, I'm never owned a 120R/ST motor.

I guess in short, ask for a 117" motor or 120ST" motor as a 110" is already a given for an replacement.

Default 110

my dealer is pushing them for replacing the engine (120ST - zero issues from their previous 120ST installs), HD wants to try one more compensator (#4) within 1200 miles with a completely stock bike that has been pampered. Apparently there is a bad batch of compensators out there that are out of spec by far out of the box. My dealer got one out of Parts, measured it, it was way out of spec too. As far as root cause, no clue. Dealer did check my crank and it was well within spec and tight. But I still have the abnormally high heat issues to deal with too - so that's another issue.

Life is complicated. What to do? 120R or ST or 117. The one possibility is that there may not be that much difference in performance between them.

Plus with the recent action of the EPA the 120R is a race only engine that now has no tune available and EPA's stance that no one can build a track only vehicle there just may not be one for sale even though it is in the 17 SE catalog .

The 120ST is rated by HD as 106 hp the 117 build could top that.

I have a 13 Street Bob with the R and a Freewheeler with the ST along with the LRS. They are all a blast.

If it was me I would go for the 117. But not my money or bike. I like the 110 in the LRS that I don't think I will mess with it. That engine in the light Dyna platform one heck of a bike.
