Default Late model 80" Evo, or an Early model 88" TC?

I'm giving some serious thought to a second Harley (again).

The prices on these, in a Fat Boy, have dropped big time. I'm seeing them all over, many starting around $4500. With under 30K miles.

Hell, I figure I can pick one up during the brutal C-Town winter for $4K or less. No more than $5K. So, starting in a month or so, I'll be watching Cycle Trader, CL, EBay and the like for a sweet deal.

Given this info, what would be the best powerplant to have? The prices are so close, that price (at this level) is not an issue.

SRO, TIA!

No question: Evo.

But then, I'm a bit biased.

Still, gotta go Evo.

Early model TC 88 you have to stay on top of the cam chain tensioners or convert it to the 07+ hydraulic tensioner and oil pump, or if your crank runout is within spec do a gear drive conversion.

I wanted an Evo but I picked up an 03 FXD recently.

I am also biased, but I say Evo!

They just sound more like a traditional Harley to me. Plus you don't have to screw with cam chain nonsense.

I had a 2002 TC88b in a Deuce. IT was a great bike, but at 34k miles my cam chain tensioners were shot. Around 30k miles you need to at least check them. In order to do that you have to open the cam chest. I replaced mine with S&S gear drive and proceeded to put another 20k miles on it, without issue. Only issue with the bike was the primary would drip a few drops of oil when it was hot, i replaced the gasket but never could get it to stop.

I would still have the bike, but traded for a 96 Evo Ultra Classic...I couldn't be happier with the EVO!

Late EVO's are solid, solid motors as long as they have been maintained. I'd go evo, and I have both
