Default Need Classic Seat Hardware Guidance

Got this 92 Heritage a few months back. Was not overly concerned with how seat is attached but over time realized what a pia it would be if I had a problem and needed access to the battery, wiring, etc. on the roadside. Looked in the manual, (page 2-90) and see a bracket system but am not sure it is for the custom seat. Went to Ronnies parts finder and do not see any attachment hardware for the passenger seat other than the bolts to attach to the solo seat.

Are the bolts only method the way this seat was designed to be attached?

Passenger seat bolted through tab and fender.

Tab on passenger seat

Nice hole in the top of the fender.

Thanks for looking.

Cool Bike. There should be a well nut and a plastic retainer that holds it in place. the well nut comes up from the bottom the retainer goes on from the top. The last time i replace one, i used a wire down through the top to pull the the well nut up through the hole then put the retainer on it. Way better than pulling the rear wheel.

Thanks guys. Hard to find the right part when you have no idea what's supposed to be there. A little research after you two pointed me in the right direction revealed that it's HD part 59768-97.

Thanks

The nut should be welded to the underside of your fender.
At least the one on my '95 is.

Went out to look and measure existing hole in fender to figure out what size well nut to buy. Noticed that the tab on the side of the old wellnut had pulled through the fender in 3 different places. Now I understand why PO had rigged this setup. THC, there is not a nut welded on the reverse side of fender. Not sure how to repair this problem. Any ideas ?

You basically have 3 choices.

1) Install a well nut.
The quicker and cheaper of the 3.
2) Pull the fender and weld a nut on the bottom side.
Option 2 will require some repainting but a good body shop should be able match the paint just fine.
While 2 is more expensive it is also permanent with no chance of falling out.
3) Pull the back seat, sissy bar and luggage rack off your bike and plug the hole.

If it was my bike I'd go with option 2.

How about a rivnut? If necessary, a washer on the back side that that the rivnut will barely fit through. 1/4x20, right?

Yeah, welding is the best way. I welded a plate on the bottom of my chopper fender and tapped it.

The problem with those thumb screw set ups is that they always vibrate loose and when they do they also wear the hole in the fender larger which in time ruins the fender. What I did was I used a 1/4-20 x 5/8 bolt with a washer up from the under side of the fender and the another washer and lock nut on the top. I can reach it all while laying on the creeper. I know it's a pita but it never loosens up..... Just remember to carry a 7/16 wrench for the underside and a 7/16 socket and ratchet 1/4" drive. Yea I know the looks are more to be desired...
