Default Oil, hot or cold

Talking to a buddy that changes his oil when it's cold, I warm up the bike up and then change the oil. What is your opinion?

Change it warm/hot and open the filler cap up for venting so more contaminates come out as the oil flows out quicker.

Probably makes sense if it's warm. But, in the long run doesn't really matter.

That's a good question, most say hot.

But, I've done it both ways with various vehicles, when I would do it cold it took more to top it back off than when hot.

So far with my Harleys, it's always been hot.

If you're going to do it cold, it's best if it's been sitting for a long time and not just a few hours since more oil will have had time to drain down from the top of the motor. I've wondered about that too though. For all intents and purposes, it probably really doesn't matter.

I try to do it after a ride hot before any contaminates settle out.
