Default Best project bike for father and son

My son just celebrated his 12th birthday and I have been thinking of starting a project bike together with him. I can still remember my 14th birthday getting my motorcycle license...very good memory. Anyway I wanted something to be able to share with him. These new bikes just don't require anything other than an oil change and a wash so I don't think he can learn much. Looking for something that he can get his hands on and understand how it works and develop an appreciation for the mechanical aspects.

Best project bike? Old sporty? Something that would also be a good first bike.

If you want it to be his first bike, and you want it to be a Harley, you can't go wrong with a Sporster.

JMHO...YMMV...

Default A mid 70s to 80s sporty

Any thing you decide on is an investment in your life and builds everlasting memoirs that will stay with you and your son forever. Used to turn wrenches with my dad got me into hot rods and anything with a motor he's gone now but always remember times hanging off the side of a fender with him. Enjoy. Wild Bill

had my son there working and also have now my grandkids always best of times.

I've always said there's no head like a Ironhead --- but the 883 has proven to be one of the best engines H-D has ever made , '85 on up - can be built to a 1250

Another thing I have been thinking of is trying to recreate the bike in my leg tattoo that an artist drew up for me in KC.
