Default Rattle/grind noise

I'm in need of help. I have a 2010 road glide with a stock 96 and 28k miles. After I ride the bike for a while then stop and shut it off I start it back up. Then there is a grind/rattle that sounds like it's coming from the primary. The sound only is in neutral when I put it in gear it goes away. And the sound is intermittent it will do the sound every 2-4 seconds not all the time. Thought it was the starter clutch not disengaging but the starter is working properly. Then pulled the primary and nothing in the primary looks bad or is loose. Gears all look good inner primary bearing looks fine comp sprocket looks fine along with the spring pack it's still tight.

I would describe this noise as if you had a bolt with 3 washers on it and a nut but the nut wants tight and you shook the bolt. I can't figure it out my mechanic can't figure it out. He said he's stumped because everything looks great.

My question is has anyone every had this happen and if so what fixed it. And no I don't have the funds to throw all the new parts into it to just hope and pray.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I guess our next step is in the transmission. This noise is definitely not in the motor from what me and my mechanic heard.

Thanks
John

Keep the rubber side down.

Has your mechanic checked the inner primary bearing?

Yes we tore it apart earlier and there is no abnormal wear. We are stumped and reaching out for help. Before I go to the dealer.

I had a very similar noise on my '13 RK. I eventually found it was a loose hose clamp on the exhaust. It's under the heat shield so you only see it looking from the other side of the bike.

Was driving me nuts for a while til I found it.

I will be furious but happy at the same time if it's something like that. I will check tomorrow thanks for the reply. It does have 2-1 exhaust though but maybe.

I had a similar noise (based on your description) on my '09, although after a while mine would do it while shifting also.. It was around the 50,000 mile mark. I too thought it to be an inner primary bearing. Took the trap door off the tranny and there were shavings in there about a half inch thick. Total tranny failure. it was ugly. They had my bike for a month while HD decided on what output shaft they wanted to use. Went back to revision 8b. It sucked. This is one reason why I no longer use syn 3 in the tranny.

We did drain the tranny oil and there was not any abnormal shaving or metal that came out. We are gonna take the top off and look in there we figured it would do it all the time if it was the tranny also but at this point we can't find it.

Is the primary chain stretched? Is the chain tensioner in good shape? Have you had the outer primary cover off and started the bike to hear the noise?

Chain looks brand new chain tensioner has minimal wear. We have not had it running with it apart we started taking it apart to see if something was broke. It only does it when hot so it won't even make the noise untill then.

Please keep the suggestion coming though the more we get hopefully we can figure it out.

Thanks John
