550 cord or Parachute cord will outlast the bike but it will be slippery if you ride barehanded. I had a talented guy do my entire steering wheel on a M1009 CUCV I owned in the same weave they use on ships wheels only they use a rope instead of 550. It was awesome and I had better grip on that wheel than anything I've ever used.
Look up various weaves and you'll find the name of it. Here's a pic of mine, loved it better than the truck.

Nice thing is you've got a few feet of cord to use in an emergency if you ever need it for something else. They actually sell a 550 cord that's black with a reflective strand in it too. Looks good!!

i've been using paracord for key chains for a long time. they do eventually wear and get cruddy. the thing is it is so cheap you cut it off and just re wrap it. i had these pieces left over from a 100 foot roll i had and so the 20 or so feet i used may have cost about $5. not a big deal to just replace when it gets nasty.

I appreciate the work put into the version in the first pic. I'm sure equal work went into the one in the second, but to my untrained eye, the first looks more intricate.
It's something you won't see on another bike and truly something "your own."
All that said, I'm not diggin the visual appeal, personally. YMMV. But if it makes the levers more comfortable for you on the ride, that's bigger than looks.
