Default Installed 68T Sportster Pulley to lower gearing

This is by far the easiest and cheapest way to lower your gearing to what the Touring bikes have. Since there is little information about this swap I thought I would point out a couple of things. 2007 and up Sportsters all have the 68T pulley. There are a lot of different parts numbers but the only difference is the color and style. The stock Softail pulley had a much thicker flange where it mounts to the hub. This is just to get the pulley position correct and nothing to worry about strength wise. So I ordered a wheel spacer. But i screwed up and did not account for the difference in offset between the pulleys. So I had to remove it and do the job over. You will have to buy new bolts as the flange thickness will not allow for the stock bolts. You need 7/16 by 14 by 2 inch grade 8 bolts. I should also point out that for some reason HD increased the torque spec from 55-65 lbs to 80 lbs. 80 lbs exceeds the spec for 7/16 x 2 bolts in the aluminum hub. Dont know what HD was thinking but I used the earlier spec of 65 lbs. You will have to remove the top muffler and the brake caliper and pads. The brake pad pin uses a 1/4 12 point socket so your gotta make sure your have one. The mounting bolts are 40 torx. The hardest part of the job. and something that is a pain in the *** is getting the arm that holds the caliper in position when putting the wheel back on. The axel goes through the arm. Everything fit with no issues. Top and bottom belt guards fit. Belt went on easy. Belt tracks about 1/8 inch closer to the inside which still leaves plenty of room. Now keep in mind that if you have other than a Slim you might experience something that has to modded. In fact make sure you measure everything. But others have done this on various Softails. I do remember one guy had to cut a notch in his lower belt guard. I could never find a used pulley that was not scratched all to hell or had a lot of miles on it. So I just ordered a new one. Cheapest price I found including shipping was Kutter HD at $160. Part number was 40350-07. Hope this helps anyone considering this mod.

The stock pulley mounting flange on my bike is approx 1/4 thicker than the sportster flange. But the sportster flange sits approx 1/4 inch further in. So its a wash in my application. From the outside edge of the pulley to the wheel hub is 1.5 inches

So, this lowered your final drive ratio from 2.79 to 2.88. Could you tell the difference?
