Default When's A Tire Worn Out?

The rubber on my rear tire (160mm stock tire on a Deuce) is looking kind of skinny. There ispainfully littlegrove left in the 'tread' at the tire center; some but not much. For the life of me I can't find any wear indicator blockson the tire; you know, the little tabs of rubber between the groves that show when its time to replace the tire. How do you know its time other than that gut feeling?

Get a tread depth gauge--about $2-3 at any auto parts store. When you have less than 2/32" inch of tread left, it's time to change.

I believe that if it looks worn out, it is. Change it.

Tires wear differently depending on the weight of the bike and compound of the tire. I would start checking wear after 4,000 miles. All tires have tread wear indicators. Locate your indicator, if it's flush with the tread surface; time to change your tire.

a quick guide to know when to change your tires, is to do the penny test’. put a penny into a tire groove with its head pointing down if you can see the top of the head of the person on the coin, its time to change tires. this is an indication that the tread depth has already reached about 1/32 of an inch. a lot of bikers have the front tire wear out faster than the rear not counting you hole shot bikers, this would be because you brake late using mostly the front brake I have a habit of doing this seems like the back brake does very little for me. most cruiser riders wear the back tire first because they have more weight on the back of the bike i would think this would hold true if you ride two up a lot

G'day Kong, as far as I know all tyres have tread wear indicators. Look on the side wall of the trye and there should be a triangle symbol perpendicular to the indicator.

Rich,

Thank you very much! I've learned something new today that I should have known decades ago I suppose. Little triangle, just like you said.
