Default Fluids

Anyone have a quick reference guide for a 2000 fatboy with 88. I'm going to change all three oils. Need to know what kind of oil for each and how much

When filling the primary back up can u fill through the derby or the tensioner inspection cover. I've seen people doing both.

Default Careful refilling!

Repair manual says to fill engine with 3 1/2 qt. if oil has been drained. Not so! Start out with less than 3 qt. - check oil level and fill a little at a time until level is between marks on dipstick. Should be at "full" mark when hot - not cold.
I just tried to pour 3 1/2 qt. into tank and it overflowed. Needed to "turkey baster" the excess out!

Welcome to the forum.

There is an entire sub-forum dedicated to this topic. Read through the "Sticky"s at the top to see what fluids are used most often.

As far as how much and where to fill the fluids, you need to get yourself the 2000 Softail Service manual.

Good luck and enjoy your Fatty.

To answer your question......Softail manual states the following with the bike upright:

Primary - level with the bottom edge of the clutch diaphragm spring - approx 26 oz.

Engine Oil - I usually add 3 quarts of oil to the oil bag. Warm up the bike and then fill to upper grove of dipstick. However, I keep it a little below that line.

Transmission - Lubricant should be at the (F) Full mark on the dipstick. Dipstick should rest on the lip of the filler, so don't screw in.

Now, you'll get a lot of different opinions on what fluids you should use. I will not recommend anything, but tell you what I use, and I have 105,000 miles on my bike. For the engine, I use Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic motor oil. In the primary, I use conventional Pennzoil 10w40 oil. And finally in the transmission, I use Redline Shockproof Heavy gear oil.

Hope this helps you!

Buy a manual specific to your bike. Its one of the best things you can do for yourself.
